New Year, Old Problems, and Always New Hope

As we are halfway through the year, many of the challenges we face as a community look familiar. Families are still struggling to make ends meet. Individuals are still navigating housing insecurity, food access, and the pressures of making life work from day to day. The problems we work on every day at ACSA did not disappear when the calendar turned.
And yet, hope remains new.
A couple of weeks ago, two young women arrived at the Agency with a large donation collected through a food drive they had organized at an aerodynamics company in Scarborough, where they were completing a student placement. They had taken the initiative themselves, mobilizing colleagues, coordinating the drive, and choosing to support our community
As they brought the food inside, one of the women shared something that stopped me in my tracks.
She shared that one of the best times of her life was when she attended ACSA’s Afterschool Programs many years ago. She spoke about the comfort of having a safe place to go every day after school, a place with games, food, and people who cared. She shared how her mom always talked about the peace of mind the program gave her, knowing her daughter was safe and well cared for while she finished her workday.
“I wanted to do something special for ACSA,” she said, “because this place really helped me and my mom when I was growing up.”
That moment captured everything ACSA's work is about!
Hope is not abstract. It is built over time through programs that offer safety, consistency, and care. It is carried forward in memory, and it reappears years later as generosity, leadership, and a desire to give back. The support offered to one family years ago became a new beginning, not just for them, but now for others.
This is what hope looks like in action.
As we continue to navigate 2026, we do so with realism and resolve. The challenges ahead are real. But so is the impact of showing up, year after year, for the people who need us. We see it in the dedication of our staff, the generosity of our donors and funders, the commitment of our volunteers, and in stories like this one, where yesterday’s care becomes today’s compassion.
